Xale Slusser

GREETINGS GAUCHOS AND GAUCHO PARENTS!

I'm Xale, and I teach all of the music courses here at Narbonne High School.  I'm in my second year here at NHS after coming to you from my former position as an Arts Administrator (building up new programs and training CalArts students to become better Music teachers up in the Santa Clarita Valley) and am thankful every day that our AWESOME principal reached out to me last year with this great opportunity to help Narbonne's music program grow to be something amazing!  Every day I go to work: it's like "homecoming" with how much it reminds me of my own high school.  Plus: I get to share music every day with a bunch of great kids.  YOUR kids!

A LITTLE ABOUT ME:

I am a Performance Artist, a Recording Musician, a Rock Star, the Saxophone-and-Clarinet playing Smilodon in the band BONEHENGE, a professional World Flutist and Ethnomusicologist, and an Orchestral Woodwind Specialist—primarily focusing on Double Reeds like Bassoon and Oboe.  (Though: I know my way around a Drum Set, Viola, and the Ukulele!).  I’m also a Composer, an Arranger (I will be arranging a lot of music for our growing Advanced Band), a BOSS Private Lesson Tutor, an LA Explorer—and I’m known to steal tennis balls… (just ask my students, haha!)

I believe in the importance of self-expression as a musician, image and creativity as an artist, and that mental health is an important necessity.  Be the best “you” that you can possibly be!  I am L(G)BTQ+ and Non-Binary.  My preferred pronouns are They/Them/Their.  And yes: it is “Mix” Slusser, if you’re being formal.  Otherwise: My students know “Xale” is just fine, and what I prefer.

I hold quite a few degrees:  I have a B.M in Music Performance, a B.M. in Music Composition, a B.S. in Science (Biology with Pre-Med and EMT studies), and a B.A. in Political Science (Pre-Law) from Ohio Northern University.  Go Polar Bears!  I also have a M.F.A. in Music (Performer Composer), and a M.F.A. in Film/Video (Lighting Design and Video Puppetry Studies) from CalArts.  I’m currently working on a M.A. in Education which I should have done in January 2021 from National University.  I love learning.

DISTANCE LEARNING:

As you all know, we’re all currently enduring the effects of “Safer-at-Home” directives and responsible “Physical Distancing” (while we all remain Healthily Social).  Because of the ongoing COVID-19 Pandemic: LAUSD has chosen to take science and medicine into rightful consideration and keep us all learning at-a-distance due to the risk that COVID-19 poses for many of us, our friends, our family, and our community around us.

With our continued Distance Learning: ALL of our assignments and communications will be handled over SCHOOLOGY.  If you are enrolled in any of my classes (listed below), you will find your course and all correspondence posted within your LAUSD SCHOOLOGY account.  If you need help accessing this: please contact our Assistant Principal: Ms. Montoya with your account-related questions.  (Per my knowledge: Ms. Montoya is able to best-direct people with Login and other Account-Related issues/questions.)

Narbonne’s most dedicated musicians. This band performs at Parades, Public Events (such as the Harbor City Winter Wonderland) and for NHS Football Games as the Marching Gauchos and in a more traditional concert-band setting playing some fun and interesting music for great concert events!
    • This band’s members typically re-join year-to-year and take music seriously. I try to help them become college-ready if they are interested in pursuing music as a Major, Minor, or even a GREAT hobby.  Their motto is: “Play Like Gods” as the little band with a BIG sound!
