Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals Update

LAUSD now has a centralized process for students known as “Dreamers.” Beginning August 15, 2012, thousands of current and former students who arrived without documentation to the United States as children may now be eligible for President Obama’s Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. If these individuals meet certain requirements, they would be free from deportation for two years (renewable) and would be eligible for work permits even though they are not U.S. citizens.

Requests for student records may now be made online at DACArequest.lausd.net, which will go live on Monday, Sept. 17, 2012. Or, the form may be downloaded from the Deferred Action Information page and mailed to the School Information Branch. This centralized DACA process is free.

Thank you to all office personnel who previously fulfilled these requests. We ask that you direct individuals to the online process. Please refer to the updated Reference Guide REF-5826.1 for more detailed information, including the new form.

P.E. Credits for Playing Sports

Many of you have been asking about physical education credits via the sports you play for high school. If you play a sport, you are eligible for P.E. credits when you participate in a CIF sanctioned sport during SEASON ONLY. If you participate in the off-season sport, you may be eligible for P.E. if, and only if, the teacher on record possesses a P.E. teaching credential or the equivalent to a P.E. credential. Spirit teams are NOT CIF sanctioned sports and are not eligible for physical education credits. If you participate in just one sport for the four years you attend high school, then you have met your two-year physical education requirements for graduating high school.

The following sports are and will be offered during period 6:

  • Baseball;
  • Basketball;
  • Basketball;
  • Softball;
  • Swimming;
  • Tennis.

Other sports meet and practice after school. This is determined on whether or not the head coach of the team is a credentialed on-campus teacher or a walk-on coach.

Once, again, if you are a student-athlete,"student" is first; "athlete" is second. You must maintain a 2.0 GPA to be eligible to participate in practices or games/meets. We encourage student-athletes to maintain a 3.5 or higher GPA.

Credits to Promote

The pathway to graduation is credits earned.  The number of credits earned is one determination of grade-level. For graduates years 2012-2015:

11th to 12th Grade

For graduates in year 2016, there have been a number of changes in graduation requirements.  Please see your counselor for more information.
